Lake Michigan Fish

Here are the types of fish you might catch on Lake Michigan

We focus on catching five types of fish on Lake Michigan: Coho Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Lake Trout, and of course, King (Chinook) Salmon

Early spring- Late April/May – Brown Trout, Coho, and Lake Trout make up the bulk of the catch, with Kings and Steelhead (Rainbows) mixed in heavier as we approach the end of May.  Fishing in the early months may be a bit chilly on the lake, but the bite can be very hot!

June – The Coho are still around and getting bigger, while more Kings, Lake Trout, and Steelhead are starting to show up.  Some of the best days on the water can be had in June.

July - The Coho bite is generally slowing down, but the Kings are heating up. Offshore fishing for Kings, Lake Trout, Coho, and Steelhead can be expected.

August - Big Kings are preparing to spawn, this can be a tough time of year for numbers of fish but presents a great chance at 20+ pound Kings.  Some large Coho are caught as well as nice Browns, Lakers, and Steelhead.

September - Mature Kings can still be found preparing to make the river run, and great action of 2- and 3-year-old Kings can be found.  Lake Trout and Steelhead can be very active as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best time to fish?  Any time you can!  We focus on different species of fish and adapt our techniques and methods throughout the season to stay on the hot bite.  Refer to the “What to Expect Page” for more information.

Do I need fishing experience? Absolutely not, first-timers are welcome!  We have the experience and knowledge needed to catch fish, and we’ll walk you through the process.  The hard work is our job, you can sit back, relax, and wait for us to yell, “Fish on!” At that point, we’ll guide you through bringing in the fish. Don’t worry, we handle the cleaning, too!

What if my group is larger than 6 people?  Coast Guard regulations limit each boat to 6 passengers.  For larger groups, we can accommodate by working with our network of Captains in the area.

How will weather conditions affect our trip? Though we can fish through all types of weather, we may need to cancel based on the weather.  The Captain will contact you the evening before and/or the morning of a scheduled trip to discuss.  In the event of cancellation, your deposit will be applied to a future trip.
